A History of Greatness - The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer

Few vehicles on the roads of North America have a lineage as great as the Mitsubishi Lancer. First introduced way back in 1973, the Lancer was a compact sedan engineered like no other. Almost immediately the Lancer made a name for itself by winning the Safari Rally twice and the Southern Cross Rally four times in sporty 1600 GSR trim.

Of course, Mitsubishi wasn't satisfied to rest on its laurels, and continued to improve the Lancer. This system of continuous advancement culminated in the original Lancer Evolution I. The combination of a turbocharged 2.0L engine and four-wheel drive proved exceptionally popular, and Mitsubishi wisely stuck with this formula for subsequent Evo's.

In the midterm, Mitsubishi continued to dominate the World Rally scene with Lancer derivatives from 1993 until 2007. With five podium finishes under its belt, the Lancer was a force to be reckoned with on the loose gravel and winding rally courses throughout the world.
Of course, Mitsubishi continued to update and revise both the Lancer and the Lancer Evolution to incorporate greater levels of sophistication and performance. Along the way, such icons of Japanese motoring like the Evolution VIII and Evolution IX were produced - achieving cult status with driving enthusiasts across the world.

All of this progress eventually came to a head in the tenth generation of the Lancer. Initially introduced in 2007, the Lancer had never been so comfortable, economical, or as safe as it was now. Of course, its long legacy of motorsport ensured that even this latest generation was every bit as fun as its predecessors.

The Evolution X also reached new heights of performance and driving excitement. Its 291 horsepower and Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) made this the fastest and best-performing Evo the world had ever seen. And while the Evo X's swan song came last year in the form of the Lancer Evolution Final Edition, its spirit lives on in the 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer.

With a powerful yet efficient 2.4L MIVEC engine, and the option of the famed All Wheel Control (AWC), the new 2017 Lancer is still the best choice for Canadians looking for an inexpensive compact sedan that's fun to drive - no matter what the weather's like outside.
